a rose

a rose bud is tight
wrapped upon itself
a potential yet to unfold

the blossom opens
colors and petals
revealing a beauty untold

once blooming in full
the fullness of joy
evident for all to behold

opening is through
the center exposed
its story is somehow not whole

the torah’s a bud
alluding to more
unseen fullness yet to unfold

then prophets unpack
more of his truth shown
a glimpse of a story untold

this testament shows
the Glorious One
a Savior for all to behold

epistles complete
the truth known throughout
a story that’s finally whole

Battle

there are armies of foes lined up to attack

marching in a rhythmic drone of dread

life’s warriors opposed to my chosen track

they’re towering before me with intimidating stares

wrestling my faith from my feeble grasp

each one worthy of the ensuing nightmares

their arrows and darts mean to wound and kill

the awareness of my inadequacy i cannot evade

so before His glory and power i am quietly still

i cry out to Him to fight on my behalf

to rescue me from these worries and ills

to comfort me with His rod and His staff

shoes of peace on my feet, His armor’s in place

with a belt of truth, and God’s righteousness on my back

the sword of His Spirit and a strong shield of faith

now prepared for this battle, i rest in His love

the shadow of his might overwhelms me with grace

and i quietly and expectantly await victory from above

Jesus Calling – Sarah Young – 8/18 – Anticipate coming face to face with impossibilities: situations totally beyond your ability to handle. This awareness of your inadequacy is not something you should try to evade. It is precisely where I want you — the best place to encounter Me in My Glory and Power. When you see armies of problems marching toward you, cry out to Me! Allow Me to fight for you. Watch Me working on your behalf, as you rest in the shadow of My Almighty Presence.

Armor of God – Ephesians 6:13-17 “Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

victory

Some dear friends recently shared a passage of Scripture with my wife and me that had encouraged them through some hard times of their own. The passage was Psalm 20.

I paraphrased it for them like this:

in times of trouble
He hears our cry
the God of Jacob keeps us safe unto Him
He sends us help
from His sanctuary
and strengthens us from Jerusalem

our heart’s desires
He grants for us
and makes all our plans succeed
we shout for joy
raise our banner high
for in the name of our God is victory

the anointed king
is answered from heav’n
and rescued by His great pow’r
some nations boast
of chariot and horse
but we boast in the name of our God

those nations will all
collapse and fall down
but we stand firm and rise up
give us victory
oh Lord, to our king
and answer our cry for help

I hope this serves to encourage others as it has encouraged our friends, and as it has likewise encouraged us…

Grace and peace,

Delton

Sixteen Shots

Romans 3:3-4 “We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation.”

I’ve heard that character is who you are in the dark, when no one is watching. That’s a valid description in most scenarios, but I think character is also who you are when everyone is watching.

I flipped on SportsCenter recently, and one of the lead stories that day was that of Kevin Na, a PGA Tour professional. Fortunately for duffers everywhere, but quite unfortunately for him, Kevin had a really tough ninth hole at TPC San Antonio. After replaying the video to recount his strokes on this par four hole, he signed his card showing a sixteen. Yes. Sixteen.

Let that sink in a little. A professional golfer took a sixteen on a hole. He went from one under par to eleven over par in one hole. Pretty sure that’s a record of some sort…

In an interview afterwards, he said that one of his shots hit a branch and bounced back an hit him. As if getting hit with your own ball isn’t penalty enough, the rules call for a penalty stroke. Then, he swung one time and missed the ball altogether. Again, penalty stroke (though we hackers would probably call that a practice swing). He counted everything. Every. Single. Stroke.

There were three things that I noticed about that video clip that really stood out to me. First of all, standing in the woods and hitting through trees, the only person in the world that could know that the ball hit Kevin on a rebound is Kevin. Yet, he took the penalty, because those are the rules. Not only did that take courage, it was a significant show of integrity, of character.

Secondly, they showed him walking with his caddie toward the green (finally), and he was jovially laughing. He was fourteen strokes into a par four hole, and he was smiling and joking. “Not sure, but I think I’m somewhere between ten and fifteen,” he said to his caddie. There are duffers everywhere that would be breaking expensive clubs over one knee if they were “somewhere between ten and fifteen” on one hole, especially if they were miraculously one under par heading into that hole.

The last thing that really stood out to me was Kevin’s score on the back nine… a 33. That’s three under par for the back nine, those same nine holes that immediately followed his sixteen shot wonder. What an incredible show of fortitude!

We’ve all faced difficulties and trials, times when it would be easy to fold under the pressure. How we endure those difficulties speaks volumes about our character, and about the eternal hope we have. And that same confident hope allows us to regroup after a trial and “swing our club” once again.

Next time I’m tempted to use a “foot-wedge” from the woods, I hope I remember Kevin Na, and have the character he had when everyone was watching.

Grace and peace,

Delton

going up

James Rainsford

i gaze towards the finish ahead
fatigue grips me before i begin
looking
fearing
dreading
it never ends unless i start

the steps above me seem endless
ever pressing towards the top
walking
stepping
climbing
a journey stretching in the distance

the goal above is waiting there
the destination awaiting my arrival
striving
burning
longing
each step harder than before

awaiting is such wonder and glory
invisible now but altogether real
singing
dancing
resting
worthy of the effort and toil

lenses

India Hobson Photography

this lens i stand quietly behind

cannot completely see

or capture all that hides inside

focusing only on a simile

a contrasting image obscures my view

its likeness revealing my soul

one letting another filter through

and leaving me fully exposed

i wish to embrace all that it might see

beauty deeper than skin

escaping this life of misery

a delicate grace from within

instead i see through a broken lens

a scene that’s tainted in truth

grateful that this photographic end

is shadowed with colors and hues

living

bird and man photo by James Rainsford c/o One Stop Poetry

the colored hues of stone and life

perplex the eye and mind

to believe that stone is forever etched

or that these wings are very much alive

but living tis more than a beating heart

and beauty beyond the sculpt of hand

a life well lived is worthy far more

than this bird perched on the memory of a man

for the man has carved a legacy strong

a reminder of a good that once was

while the fowl sits lifeless atop a good name

and does what a good bird does

broken silence

the silence is only broken

by forced-dammed tears

the air is sticky

coagulated grease

left on the stovetop

hollow pings from the speakers

do little to drown out the quiet

reflectors thump the tires

as the vocal chords rest

and eyes burn not with passion

the driveway finds the wheels

unfitting end to a weary ride

doors thud as dead air is trapped

the softened stairway carpets the pain

and leads upward to a new place

the car remains below and outside

and the silence is again broken

brushes

they pass in the hallway

her shirt brushes his arm

the fragrance of perfume

draws memories out

against their will

her eyes seem to say

that he’s lost his charm

though her countenance exudes

a welcoming shout

that sends chills

he goes through the day

not wishing her any harm

though he willfully chooses

to embrace doubt

love be still

so he’ll choose this life of pain

a cold heart, never warm

he’d almost rather lose

forfeit this bout

passion is chilled

he’s had his fill

stepped away from his vow

his ego’s still bruised

her heart’s alarmed

alone she’ll pray

Remnants of Shakespeare

Friends, romans, countrymen, lend me your ears,

for mine eyes aren’t enough to behold life’s beauty.

Love looks not with the eyes but with the mind

and sees with a light that in my inner darkness abides.

What light through yonder window breaks?

A golden tone both elegant and soft,

its rich warmth searching for that which lusters.

All that glisters is not gold.

As the trees look in to find their place,

all the world’s a stage

for the doyen of art to show his mastery.

This thing of darkness

hinders our view of what is lovely and

of all that is worthy of mending.

Nothing can come of nothing but

such stuff as dreams are made on.

O, what men dare do!

to leave to rot this chalice of joy.

What’s done is done,

but should not keep one from doing it again

tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow.

Pray we, too, will live our scripts with abandon,

our heart’s stage ever breathing the words of the author.

To him and to thine own self be true.

This is my submission for a One Stop Poetry’s Picture Prompt Challenge. The picture, shown above, led me to interact with remnants of Shakespeare. It’s quite a bit more than just a caption!
